Taking price into consideration, there are few objects that give me more joy on a daily basis than a great mug. This mug is one of those rare objects whose design you can appreciate, while still being able to use it and afford it.
We’ve covered interesting mugs before, but the Hot Cold Mug actually has a very conventional design. It’s oversized compared to the small diner mugs I grew up with, but the interesting part about this one is the color-changing paint on the outside that will switch from black to white when it heats up.
This is a cool effect and an interesting parlor trick, but ideally, it should be functional as well. After all, it’s great to know that the contents of the mug is scalding hot, but if the paint were sensitive enough to change when it is cool enough to drink, the Hot Cold Mug would really be worth its hefty ($25) price. It turns out that the paint isn’t quite that responsive, but it’s impossible to deny the small amount of joy that I am filled with after pouring my coffee each morning.
The mug is currently available at Charles and Marie.

Clever! Fun, too, if not really that necessary.

I’d much rather burn my tongue than drink room-temperature coffee, so that alone might justify the $25 price for me.
