Posted 10 May 2008 at 5:43 pm ¶Magnolia Bakery is a scam. The ingredients are substandard, the cupcakes dry, and the icing is made with shortening. Billy’s, a Magnolia Bakery spin/knock-off, is strangely superior, but its cupcakes pale compare to those from Cupcake Cafe, on 18th St., which uses real buttercream. Odd you didn’t mention City Bakery, also on 18th Street, which makes superb viennoiserie and tarts. Many love their cookies, too, but I find them too sweet. Speaking of cookies, the chocolate chip ones from Jacques Torres are among the best in the world. Torres’ croissants, especially pain au chocolat, are also excellent. Yet, for the most appealing croissants, from a real, small, baker-owner place, few places can match Patisserie Claude on West 4th St. As to the rest of your list: yes, Bouley Bakery, Balthazar, and Donut Plant very good (though a donut shop is by definition not a bakery), but you might have added, too, Ceci Cela (down the street from Balthazar, for their bostock (brioche toast), Once Upon a Tart, for their muffins, and Fat Witch Bakery for their brownies.
Posted 12 May 2008 at 12:44 pm ¶the banana pudding at magnolia is tasty- although i’m still not sure if it’s worth the lines – but i’ve always thought the cupcakes were pretty blech. my faves are at out of the kitchen on hudson. they only have chocolate and vanilla, but they do ‘em up right.
however, i would sell my right kidney for a lifetime supply of donut plant dulce de leches.
