Play Hooky, Have Breakfast in Paris

If you are ever fortunate enough to have a free weekday morning in the city–no work, appointments, or other annoying obligations–I strongly recommend treating yourself to a breakfast at Balthazar. Though I enjoy their weekend brunch, and it’s a great time for people-watching, I always feel very chic and European when I eat there during the week. Moreover, I can think of no better breakfast than a Balthazar doughnut–which is like no other I have tried: crisp and sugary outside, cakey yet light within–and a bowlful of cafe au lait. This could also be one of the best breakfast deals around: the doughnut is a mere $1! If you have less of a sweet tooth than I, try the try the eggs en cocotte, baked in cream and served with little “soldiers” of toast.

On another note: rather than indulging in chocolat chaud here, which to me tastes a bit powdery, opt for the creamy cafe au lait or the bracing cafe americain.

+1 to all of that, especially to the eggs. a similar experience at a local french bakery with similarly wonderful cafe au lait was on the to-do list for today… until i decided to sleep late and then spend the afternoon reading a new book cover-to-cover and eating excellent take-out.
