I’m in a hot-chocolate phase: the city is besieged by frigid winds and snow flurries, and all I want to do is snuggle up in my new Missoni blanket with magazines and a big latte bowl, full of steaming, liquid chocolate and hulking cubes of home-made (ok, ok, made by Whole Foods–even I have my limits) marshmallows. My recipe for Nutella hot chocolate came about as a result of laziness (City Bakery’s hot chocolate is phenomenal, but too many blocks from my apartment) and an almost-empty jar of the chocolate-hazelnut spread hanging out in my cabinet. It’s quite easy: warm milk and a few blobs of Nutella over a low flame, and accessorize with a cinnamon stick and cocoa powder to offset the sweetness. You might add a pinch of espresso powder if you’re feeling crazy.
Nutella Hot Chocolate:
- 1 cup whole milk (feel free to substitute skim, rice, almond, etc)
- 3 tb Nutella or other chocolate-hazelnut spread
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tsp high-quality cocoa powder
- 1 or more marshmallows
- pinch of espresso powder (optional)
In a heavy-bottomed sauce pan over a low flame, whisk together the milk, Nutella, cocoa powder, and espresso (if using). Add cinnamon stick. Simmer for about 5 minutes, to allow flavors to meld.
Serves one, generously.

Ok, Nutella in cupboard…check. Freezing day outside… check! Might have to make this one for kids after school today (and me too!) Looks delish!

Cooking! Genius! Thank you!
This is a great idea. I dare say it would be a delightful hot toddy with a splash of Frangelico. If only I didn’t have the unfortunate tendency of polishing off any open Nutella jar within a 5 mile radius by eating it with a spoon.
