My New Favorite Pastry

Caffe Falai in Soho is one of my favorite spots in the city: it’s low-key but very Euro-chic, with its all-white interior, chandeliers, mirrors, and big windows up front. At brunch and lunch, you can get warm bowls of baked eggs accessorized with any number of cheeses and meats, fresh ricotta with wine-soaked figs, and big, leafy salads.

When I headed there this morning, I had just one thing in mind (besides coffee, of course): a pastry. I was so excited about my choice of chocolate-pear turnover that I had to take a few sneaky pictures with the camera-phone (see above and below) to show everyone.

The turnover is as much about the integrity of the pastry itself as it is about the filling. Its exterior is crisp, dusted with confectioners’ sugar and cocoa; inside, the delicate and flaky layers puff up to reveal pastry cream, dark chocolate cream, and a puree of pear. My only regret is that I didn’t order a second turnover for later!
