A Jewelbox by the Seine

In continued celebration of my recent trip to Paris, I present my favorite jewelbox of a bakery: Gérard Mulot. Though I love the macaroons at Ladurée, and their multiple locations make it convenient to break for a treat, there is something special about GM. On a tiny street in the heart of the sixth arrondissement, steps away from Café de Flore and the luxe shopping on the rue des Saints-Pères, it is light-filled and intimate, and less-touristy than Ladurée.

Unlike most bakeries in the city, they have a case toward the back with sandwiches and other light-lunch options. However, you go there for the jewel-like pastries. Clafoutis, tarts, and gateaux abound, and the macaroons are lined up in a colorful row at the front of the shop. The oversized almond cookies sandwiching fresh raspberries and cream, garnished with crushed pistachios, as pictured above, beckon from the windows. Just try to resist! I couldn’t.

Also worth noting:  the cassis-violette macaroon, as pictured above, is ridiculous.  Iridescent purple, crisp exterior; deep indigo, chewy interior; tart, fruity filling.  It’s practically worth the jet lag!

That purple is to die for - I want one! I wonder if I can find a recipe that approximates those…

Escaping the family home in the Paris suburbs, last Christmas, (too many peeps, too much noise) the hubby and I got a room at the Hotel du Globe, literally 5 steps away from GM…Cerisai and canneles for breakfast…oh dear sweet heaven!!
I love his hops, maybe because it is not as jetset as PH or Laduree yet, remains old Paris and approachable.

Even the glace there is GREAT! GM is my favorite patisserie in Paris!!!

The macaroons there were about 25 euros, for a box of 12. That was 2 yrs ago =P.
